A table showing the characteristics of Latvian KGB Agents.
The table above represents crucial characteristics of Latvian KGB operatives among three different agent classifications: regular agents (RA), recruitment reserves (RR), and department #1 agents (D1). Regular agents handled internal relations and were the most populous department. The recruitment reserves were a contingent group used only in special situations. Department #1 agents were a small group of operatives responsible for external intelligence. The table can provide helpful insight into the recruiting patterns and prestige in each department. The first statistic displays that, on average, RR members were the oldest, while RAs were the youngest. The age difference suggests recruitment for the RR was not as selective as for the RA, as the KGB preferred recruiting younger operatives. Additionally, D1 recruiters tended to recruit more seasoned and knowledgeable recruits, even if it meant slightly older operatives. Another key statistic is education. Most importantly, the RR has the highest number of recruits who did not complete a secondary education, while the D1 members had none. For both RR and RA, the majority of their members had only a secondary education; in contrast, almost all D1 recruits held a university degree, suggesting that the D1 selection process was more rigorous than those of the other departments.
